Wildfire estimated to be 400 acres in size burning in southern Manitoba

WINNIPEG Fire crews in southern Manitoba are working to extinguish a wildfire estimated to be about 400 acres in size. Stuartburn Fire Chief Bob Fosty told CTV News the fire was reported around 2:30 p.m. on Monday. It is burning roughly seven kilometres southwest of Zhoda though Fosty said its origins are unclear at this time. While fire crews do not yet have the fire under control as it spreads out towards the east and west, Fosty said there have been no evacuations required. There has been no injuries or loss of life or loss of property, but we are working at it to extinguish both the east and the west edge of it.

Abandoned rats found in north Winnipeg being nursed back to health

WINNIPEG An animal rescue shelter is praising city workers for helping rescue 11 abandoned rats. Cindy Hildebrand is the director of Popcorns and Binkies Rescue Haven and she said on March 29, she received an email from city workers saying several rats had been found in a cage at a worksite on Murray Avenue near North Main Street and the Perimeter Highway. When I got out there (the workers) had basically left it exactly how they had found it. So I was able to see this piece of carpet over a cage and when I lifted the carpet back and I had climbed into the ditch, there were at the time looked like about six to eight rats in the cage, but it turned out there were 11 in total, said Hildebrand.

Lazada pop-up store at Raffles City takes over space formerly occupied by Robinsons

SINGAPORE - The space formerly occupied by Robinsons on the third level of Raffles City Shopping Centre has now been taken over by online retailer Lazada. Over the next two weeks, Lazada will be showcasing home furnishings and smart home products at its 10,000 sq ft pop-up store. It is the latest online retailer to go physical, albeit for a short period of time. This is a move experts say can attract more shoppers to malls and offer more choices to consumers. Ms Esther Ho, director of Nanyang Polytechnic s School of Business Management, said that shopping malls were badly hit last year, with a few well-known anchor tenants or multi-chain stores - such as Robinsons and Topshop - closing down or moving out.

It s about as serious as you can get : Climatologist says dry conditions may lead to possible prairie drought

WINNIPEG A climatologist says dry conditions across Canada s prairie provinces may lead to a drought – a situation he says could be devastating for prairie growers.  In his soil moisture report delivered early last week, Manitoba Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler said precipitation levels in southern parts of Manitoba and Saskatchewan are down 20 per cent what they have normally been for the past 40 years. The minister said the province s risk of any major spring flooding is low. He said because the Red River has already peaked, the Red River Floodway will not be used this year. While spring flooding is not a concern, Schuler said another problem could potentially be on the horizon – a drought.
